Vice President's Message - December

Steve Cummings | Published on 12/1/2025

Greetings East Iowa Ski Club members. The holiday season is almost upon us and that means snow will be on the way. If you attended the November member meeting you heard Janet’s update on Marty’s health condition. I am happy to continue filling in and writing the vice president’s message until Marty is feeling better and able to take over.  Denise and Brad Langhoff had an entertaining summary of their bicycle tour vacation through Ireland. This worked out great as a kickoff to the EISC’s Cosmos Highlights of Ireland and Scotland Tour that the club is offering in September of 2026. This will be one of the most ambitious trips the Adventure Travel Team has tried. Diane Scholl reviewed the trip details and had maps available for what looks to be a great adventure for the club.

This is the time of year where we look for new candidates for the EISC board. Rosanne Van Cura is leading the effort to find volunteer board members to replace those who are retiring. Please consider serving on the board. It is our volunteer board that leads the club and keeps it strong. There are all sorts of opportunities to serve and help your club.  It can be fun and rewarding to see the events and activities work out for all of us. We need the nominations pretty soon as the elections are coming up in February.

The EISC ski trips really filled up in November. It looks like another La Nina weather pattern this winter so there should be plenty of snow for skiing. I am looking forward to riding the new Wild Blue Gondola, seeing all of the improvements and skiing the Champagne powder at Steamboat in a few months. The club can look forward to spending early March at Winter Park, where the skiing is always a great time. There will be plenty of opportunity for some Midwest skiing between our West trips.  Todd Eadie and Lori Huff have set up a fun trip to Stillwater, MN skiing on two favorite Midwest resorts Wild Mountain and Welch Village. I am sure we will be making the day trips to Sundown Mountain in Dubuque to get our ski legs ready. It is always fun to support our local ski hill.

The Adventure Trips seem to have most of the interest at the meetings. The Spring Black Hills bus trip has a great itinerary & is filling up. There were updates on the three bicycle / camping trips in 2026.  Dave and Bev Brown will be leading the June 6th trip at Pine Lake on the Iowa River’s Edge Trail near Eldora. The 2nd bicycle / camping trip is planned for August 1st on the Sauk Rail Trail. The trail is between two lakes & parks at Lake View and Carroll Iowa. Kim Betts and the Camping Committee will be coordinating things for the campers on all of the bicycle/camping trips. The third bicycle / camping trip will be a return to the Cedar Falls area and will be led by Wendall and Jane Sents.  The camping will be at Big Woods Campground next to Gateway Park.

Thanks to all who were able to attend the November Thanksgiving meeting. The next EISC meeting is the December Christmas themed meeting on December 20.  Hope to see you all at the next EISC event.
