May Culinary Night Recap

Bill Clark | Published on 6/1/2026

Sixteen members gathered for food, drinks, and conversation at El Viejo Mexican Restaurant in Cedar Rapids.  We were supposed to go to Mextizo’s, but the evening did not start off well when we got there, found that they never recorded our reservation, and the wait time was almost an hour.  The restaurant was very crowded and noisy.  Someone suggested going to El Viejo, where we had gone for our Cinco de Mayo dinner last year.  A quick phone call confirmed that they had space available and would be delighted to accommodate us.  So, we all loaded up and headed over to El Viejo.  The restaurant was much quieter, some people who have been to both places said that the food was better at El Viejo, and what started out as a miserable evening turned into a really good time. The food was hot and tasty and the service was good although, with such a large group, we did have to wait a little while to order and receive our meals.

Our next get-together will at 6:00 pm on Tuesday, June 9 at Sacred Cow Tavern (1000 7th St SE, Cedar Rapids).  Please RSVP to Dawn Novetzke at SpecialActivities@EastIowaSkiClub.com or call my cellphone (number available in the members’ directory on the website) by Sunday, June 7, so that we may give the restaurant an accurate count.  Thanks, and look forward to seeing you there!
